Columbus man sentenced to 4 months in prison for Jan. 6 Capitol attack

An Ohio man who pleaded guilty to his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol has been sentenced to four months in prison.
Kyle Andrew Campbell, 31, of Columbus, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington for his guilty plea assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers on Jan. 6 in an attempt to stop the electoral certification process of the 2020 presidential election.
He was among thousands of supporters of former president and now president-elect Donald Trump descended on the Capitol that day on the false premise that the election had been stolen.
Prosecutors initially sought 27 months in prison for Campbell, citing his previous criminal history, which included driving under the influence in 2018 and disorderly conduct in 2015.
In addition to the four-month prison sentence, U.S. District Court Judge Randolph D. Mosst ordered that Campbell must also pay $2,000 in restitution and be under supervised release for three years after his release from prison.
According to prosecutors, Campbell and a friend traveled from Columbus to Washington, D.C. and attended Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally. Prosecutors said that Campbell and his friend were later among the first rioters to barge past the barricades and snow fencing that had a “Do Not Enter” sign on the West Front of the Capitol, the site of the initial breach.
As Campbell pushed his way through the crowd of rioters to the front, federal prosecutors said he eventually came face to face with Capitol police officers decked out in riot gear who were attempting to restrain the mob.
As the conflict escalated, surveillance footage shows Campbell punching the riot shields of Capitol police officers in an attempt to make them lose their footing. Then, Campbell ran “head first” into the riot shields. According to prosecutors, Campbell’s actions “emboldened” the angry mob as they tried to storm the Capitol.
Campbell and his friend eventually nfiltrated the Upper West Terrace of the U.S. Capitol, prosecutors said. Campbell remained there for at least an hour as police continued battling the rioters.
Campbell was charged in connection with his role in the insurrection in June.
